Magento 1.9
We’re just getting our feet wet with the latest version of Magento, version 1.9, and we thought we’d share some of the new features that may benefit some of our clients: past, present, and future.
The biggest change we’ve been seeing is out-of-the-box support for responsive designs. Since e-commerce seems to be trending more and more towards mobile shoppers, perhaps some of you out there have been thinking about adding on a mobile theme. With responsive design, it’s much easier to take that same familiar look and feel on your desktop site, and convert it to tablets, mobile phones, and other smaller-screened devices! And with version 1.9, Magento now fully supports responsive formats, which gives a big boost to us guys who design and build websites.
Magento 1.9 also supports PHP 5.4 and 5.5, which will give you more stability and speed upgrades on most servers. From what we’ve tested, even without caching enabled, a Magento 1.9 base store will outperform that on a previous version, which is fairly impressive!
Other exciting features include a code overhaul on the PayPal side (which should fix a whole bunch of lingering problems from past versions), security enhancements (including closing some cross-site scripting vulnerabilities).
